As the brilliant sun sets from the back of the car, the group received the army of Voids that charged towards them. Celine was busy distracting and finishing off the weaker Voids, Uthares using his Cross, the CrossLore, to shoot down aerial targets, and Arche was busy with creating shockwaves of damage, decimating the enemy.
Catherine stood, a lonely figure midst the defenders. She desperately wanted to have a part in the fighting, yet she sensibly knew that she had no use in the battle, and stayed back.
Suddenly, Arche snapped the two katanas he was holding and concentrated on the single, long blade. A white aura was pulsating around Arche, and they solidified, gathering on the blade, before forming a large sphere of power in an instant, booming out and the air was filled with the sharp taste of ice. The power suddenly broke apart, turning into shards of white lightning, and it crashed down on many Voids, disintegrating them.
“Not a bad for a day, is it?” Uthares said over the noise of the explosions. “We’ve rescued two girls, saved a university dorm full of students, and now we’re finishing up a mob of Voids off.” “Yeah, more than what you’d do anyway.” Arche agreed with him, smiling at the count of their achievements for the day.
“Speaking of which, don’t you find the mob not decreasing?” Celine asked, wondering if there was an end to the flood of Voids, in which the two guys seem to be half-heartedly fighting. “Good point. It seems that all we’re doing is to hold them off, with these numbers that they have. I think… there must be a Factory nearby.”
“A factory?” Catherine asked. She was new to this dark, nightmare-filled world that she had a peek into four years ago. “You know, the kind that produces stuff… just that these produce Voids, and are contained there. It poses a danger to the neighbourhood, and we‘re here to finish it.” Arche explained. “Sorry to disturb, but it seems to me that we’re barely holding them off here.” Celine pointed out, which made sense.
“There are several reasons: one, its because we should be ambushing the Factory, not standing here and letting them corner us. Two, we cannot really go all out when you ladies are here. Three, there was a delay and detour when we rescued you two, and we cannot carry out with the ambush itself, and lastly, actually Catherine’s aura is attracting all of these Voids.”
“What?” Catherine asked. So she was the cause of how Celine came to be? How Celine placed her life on the line almost every night? “Unfortunately, this is true. Your aura-- the aura of light-- is gold in colour. By the way, I can see them. This gold aura of yours makes nearby Voids excited, as you see, these auras are meant to be so.”
“Meant to be?” the explanations were getting more and more out of hand, and are hinting at something bigger than this world of Voids.
“You see, you have the ability to manipulate light. Not that you actually know of it, but one of these light manipulators, Lightbinders as we call them, exist unknowingly after the last Lightbinder has died. So, technically, the only alive who knows how to play with light is you. And one of your age, and has so little contact with actual Voids, and no combat experience, is practically never seen. You see, Lightbinders are hunted down-- literally, by the Voids. To survive to a stage where they can learn fighting is already a miracle, and these fighters… are the most powerful there are.”
“You mean, I can fight?” Catherine’s hopes of joining the fight was alive, and she already longed to fight beside her beloved.
“Not yet.” Arche dashed his hope, speaking casually under the circumstances (which was holding off a killer army with nothing else in their minds but to kill. Just so you know.), and continued his explanation on the mysterious and rare group ,”You see, your powers are locked up using powerful enchantments. You… have not even broke past the first lock, so your combat abilities are nil. I should be able to help you break the seal…”
“Then what are you waiting for?!” Catherine practically screamed. She wanted to join the fight so badly. She wanted to at least, be able to do something.
“Um… I don’t think anyone can crack a code, ten centuries old, while holding off a bunch of killers, right? Be patient. I will break that seal.” Arche said soothingly, trying not to aggravate her unstable mental condition. She calmed down a little, but the impatience was almost unbearable for her. Tears formed in her eyes as she watched two of the people she so loved risking their lives so much, and even a complete and total stranger was protecting her… it was too much for her to handle.
“I think I can start on breaking your seal within five minutes.” Arche said, smiling brightly.
“Really?” she sniffed.
“And how? I’m not thinking of holding this much off by myself. That flat-chested fire girl over there isn’t much of a help, you know.” Uthares complained.
“Hey! Who are you calling flat-chested?! I’m a …” Arche cut her off before she could finish her sentence. “Both of you, quit your whining. Who ever said I’m going to leave you all fighting like this? The rest of the squad is coming.”
“Rest of the what?” Catherine’s question was mostly drowned in a massive boom of music, knocking out half of the Voids.
“Rest of the Demigod squad. Including me and Uthares, they are the thirteen best young fighters you can find. Now let me take a look at your seal.” Eleven blurry figures stood in the distance, pointed out by Arche. He then turned his attention to Catherine, and drew up energy. A rush of excitement ran through Catherine; finally, her wait was over.

“Uthares, your job.” Arche calmly said, and hit a red button, where a small barrel emerged from the roof of the car and a soft clicking sound from the left side of the car.
“Roger that.” Uthares seems to be in a serious mood right now, as he concentrated on the barrel, and a trigger on the side of the door, acting to launch bullets from a propelled flying gun over the top of the car. Uthares targeted he Voids that were pulling forward, and shot them down.
Meanwhile, Arche was driving the car like a madman, accelerating at an unbelievable pace, yet the engine was not too loud, only producing a steady hum, barely noticeable with the jazz music playing from a local station, and the impending explosions of the Voids.
The two girls were continuously taking nervous glances at the back of the car while the two guys concentrated on the more practical business of trying to get rid of the Voids. “Um… can we really shake them?” Catherine’s voice quavered.
“Nope. Not a chance.” Arche said confidently. He was even smiling. All three of them were puzzled. Even Uthares, who was fixated on the sniping of flying Voids, stopped and turned to look at him. “What?” Uthares asked, and the same question was written over the girls’ faces. “We kill them all.” he announced.
Arche pulled to a violent stop in the middle of the road, turning ninety degrees before the car skidded to a car. “Jump ship, and form a half-circle around Catherine. I’m taking the dead front.”
The assembly process took ten seconds in grand total. Arche grinned as he faced down the impending flying horde. Uthares pulled out the bow-crossbow hybrid again, and started polishing it. Celine rubbed her hands, sparks flicking from the rubbing. Catherine was the only one, standing close to the car, doing nothing. Looking at the trio, waiting for them.
“Just watch us. Just look at how we fight.” Arche grinned at Catherine, who seemed a bit afraid of the impending skirmish.
“Hey Allen!” Catherine said, blushing. “Yes, Cat? And by the way, I’m now Arche.” Arche replied, shifting his gloves. “Don’t die,” she said.
“Well, I came back right?” Arche said. “This time… this time I’ll not die. I’d learnt to protect you in the last four years. Don’t worry!”

Extra I: the cut scenes
Somewhere,
four years ago, the day after they announced their love,
Allen’s and Catherine’s first date
“Hey, you’re late!” Catherine pouted, looking at Allen sulkily, dissatisfied with the fact that Allen was late for his first date.
“My bad. I was getting you this…” Allen dangled two sliver necklaces, both of which were limited edition lovers’ necklaces, with a heart-shaped frame.
“Took me a damn long time to get these, and they ain’t cheap either.” Allen grinned as her grouchy face turned into one of pure joy. Obviously, the necklaces were the talk of the town, and they cost a bomb. Yet, she was bowled over by such a romantic gift at their first date, which made her instantly forget that Allen was actually late.
“You baka, you don’t have to do this…” she blushed, grabbing one of the necklaces and turning around, skirt swirling and shimmering. Catherine wire a long white dress with exquisite crystals embroidered on, complete with a hot pink cap. Allen donned a long-sleeved white shirt with a pair of maroon jeans.
Abruptly grabbing her hand, Allen pulled her into a nearby photo booth and snapped many photos, where after fifteen minutes of tickling, poking, screaming, giggling and a general whale of a time, they emerged from the booth, albeit red-faced and carrying a bag of photos, they sat down at a corner of the street, picking for the best pictures to be framed in the necklace.
After carefully cutting and inserting the pictures, they put on the necklaces and off they went, on their first date.
The couple held hands as they went to different places for the whole day, shopping, taking photos, going to places that usually couples would only go. They reveled in the new idea of them being an official couple; after all, word already got out that they were an item. They went for lunch at a fancy restaurant, with the candles and all, and for their dinner, Catherine had a better idea than a candlelit dinner.
“Man, you’re right. We can see all the stars here.” Allen said, as he gazed off into the sky that glittered with countless stars. It was one of Catherine’s favourite haunts; she went to this secret, unspoiled beach, where there was no one else, just them two, bags at a corner, looking at the starry night, sharing a boxed dinner. After finishing the dinner, a little talk, they just sat there, watching the night sky, till the sun came up the next day.

“You two know each other?” were the shocked replies of both blond people (by the way, Celine‘s also blonde) after two minutes, where they just stood and gazed at the two lovers’ reunion.
“Long story,” Arche muttered to the guy, and introduced him to them. “Celine, Catherine, this is Uthares Stormwrath, my right-hand man. Uthares, this is Catherine, and that is Celine.”
“So she’s the one attracting all those trouble,” Uthares said jokingly to Catherine, his blue eyes sparkling, as if it was charged with electricity.
“We really shouldn’t stand here like this. At this rate, they are gonna send more reinforcements to deal with us.” Arche said sensibly and impatiently, and directed the two girls to the carpark, where after the impromptu evacuation after the Voids, was empty save an oversized black sports car. At first, it seems to look like any other fancy car, but running through similar models and makes, Celine, an avid sports car fan, realised that it was not of any model that she had known of. In fact, there wasn’t even a licence plate on!
‘Private-owned, self made car. Pretty sleek, right?” Arche said to the currently befuddled Celine, as if he could read her mind. That made her even more bewildered. Is the guy psychic? It made her even more curious on who this guy is, and how did he become her best friend’s boyfriend and holding hands now.
“You two, hop in.” Arche commanded Celine and Uthares, telling them to go to the back seat. After a few shoves and jostles to get the best position, Arche and Catherine hopped in, with Catherine at the right. As soon as Arche sat into the car, it powered up on itself, and it lighted up a spacious, velvet-seated interior, with gadgets, buttons, notches and switches lining the sides and the dashboard, making the whole thing looking more like a spaceship than an actual car.
Slamming the ergonomic gear into reverse and hitting the throttle fully, the car forcefully lurched backwards, and Arche confidently served the wheel to the left, and just before they hit the pillar from the prestigious archway of their university, he shifted his gear to forward and the car blasted away, into the night sky.
Even though the whole process might seem fast and disorientating, the passengers in the car seems not to feel like so, due to the G-force absorbers present around the car and on the seats, so as to reduce shock when it gets up to speed. He was already doing eighty kilometres on the street, and he was only in third gear. The tachometer was digital, showing both the numerical numbers and the bar gauge itself on a LCD screen. When Catherine caught a glimpse of it, she suddenly felt afraid that the speed might be too much, when suddenly, a small alarm beeped somewhere in the car.
“What is that?” Celine asked, awe still present in her voice.
“Bad news.” Arche said, brows creasing together, and tugging at a never-seen before ponytail. “Very bad news.”
Catherine, Celine and Uthares took a look from the rear windscreen. What they saw were a fleet of flying Voids, all headed towards them. Celine gulped. Suddenly, the car did not feel very big anymore.

When Lovers Meet
Monday, 17 January, 2017. 1920hrs.
Australia
A man in a black coat strolled down the university hallways as if he owns it.
Behind him, a blond, short-haired girls followed, wearing a skimpy leather suit, and looking a bit beat up.
The two people headed purposefully towards a girl, already sleeping in her room. But, as they reached the entrance of the building, chaos erupted. From the gate where they came by, a great flood of Voids literally poured in through the front gate. He whispered to Celine ,”Find Catherine and bring her to me.
Without so much as a warning, he then leaped onto the second storey’s floor. The half-asleep people in the dormitory screamed in fear as the saw the approaching monsters. Arche shouted over the commotion,“Don‘t worry people! This is perfectly normal, please calm down, before… oh who cares.”
Suddenly, his wrists glowed white. Well, after closer observation, it was not the wrists, but the sleeveless gloves that he is wearing that is doing the glowing. From the glowing light, a longbow was formed, also glowing at first, but the light faded, and in his hand lay a solid bow. When the impending Voids arrived, he pulled the bowstring, and as if by magic, an arrow appeared on the longbow, and he launched the arrow, hitting the leading Void square in the face, where it promptly exploded. He then launched a succession of arrows, all of which found its target, and brought down the Voids in an instant.
However, the fight was far from over. Just as the first wave was killed by Arche, a second came over, bigger than the last one, both in numbers and in size. Still, Arche continued to fire, without care of the increasing numbers. Suddenly, the bow disappeared, and two pistols formed in his hand, providing more firepower. Yet, all of these could not stop the inevitable from happening in such a massive scale invasion, and the Voids pushed through.
A wild crack of thunder suddenly flashed from the ceiling, even though the night sky was clear, and a glass panel would be shielding any would-be lightning. Three more freak flashes of thunder hit the Voids, burning all of the hit Voids into burnt crisps. Another larger flash hit the ground, away from Voids and pretty close to Arche, where from there, a suave yet scarred young man emerged from the impossible flash of lightning.
“Took you long enough,” grumbled Arche, and he did a graceful backflip, and landed on the first storey again, where the pistols evaporated like smoke, and he literally drew two swords out of himself, and charged at the army. Meanwhile, the young man on top pulled out from a holster, a weird-looking bow-crossbow hybrid, and just like Arche’s gloves, the bow-crossbow also started glowing, but this time, it glowed light blue and the surroundings crackled of electricity. From the mouth of the bow-crossbow came rapid-fire light blue arrows, each arrow finding its target, as accurate as Arche has been. Meanwhile, Arche was dancing under the platform, and the two katanas he drew out were slicing through all the Voids nearby like a knife through soft butter.
As more and more people emerged from their dormitory rooms to watch the two men fend off an army, Celine had trouble waking, and then pulling Catherine to where the two men were killing Voids. When they were there, they had to wait patiently for the two men to finish their business. Arche’s and the other man’s back was toward the two girls almost all the time, and Catherine could not catch a glimpse of their faces.
When the seemingly endless stream of Voids finally ended, the other man hopped down the platform, joining Arche to walk towards the two girls. Catherine gave a gasp; she recognised the face from four years ago, a guy that should have died.
“Allen!” she shouted, tears in her eyes, and went forth to hug the man with the black coat. He returned the hug, and asked with emotion ,”How have you been, Catherine?”

Celine
“Hey Celine, what happened to you? You’ve been looking tired of late,” Catherine said, concern showing clearly in her bright brown eyes.
“Oh, I’m fine, just… you know, the studies, the tests… never were very good at them, so extra hard work is needed, especially since my grades are slipping…” Celine said, a weak smile plastered on her pale face, with etches of tiredness showing on her face. Despite her excuses, she knew that she cannot hide the truth from her much longer. Her ‘study sessions’ are usually involving blasting away Voids, and the continual usage of her powers has been extremely draining on her. She has already fainted twice; luckily, both times she was alone in her room, and recovered quickly after. Yet, above all these, she was still worrying about one thing: lately, she has caught glimpses of a man, in a large black leather overcoat. Around him was an inexplicable aura of blinding white light, and the Voids will not dare go close to him. A worrisome thought crosses her mind that if the man is not fighting the Voids…
“Hello? Celine to Earth? “ Catherine was waving her hand at her face while she was spacing out. She flinched as she noticed her hand, and stepped back before she noticed what was happening.
“Oh, sorry. Thinking about this guy…” she smiled at Catherine again, and she was (unfortunately) telling the truth.
“Ohh… Its been long since some guy caught your attention, Miss Single. And the last guy you went out with…” she teased her.
“Had a mental breakdown seven minutes after I agreed to date him. Well, it wasn’t my fault on that, right?” she shrugged, thinking back on the poor soul who gotten convinced that she was hot, and she really was… and freaked out when he saw the Voids.
“Just like you,” Catherine said, smiling once again after Celine displayed some of her usual character. “C’mon, we’re gonna be late for our lessons if we don’t hurry.” Pulling Celine’s hand along, Catherine dragged her to her next lesson of Greek literature.
After six hours of boring lessons and four more hours of hanging around in the basketball court, watching Catherine trash the hell out of the school players, she went back to the dormitory, where she changed into her usual black outfit. Leather straps, albeit revealing, as she always thought, but they are not as easily cut up or burnt like the other types of clothing. She tightened the last strap on her and got ready to receive whatever Voids that might be coming tonight.
When she saw the impending force, she froze in her tracks. It was at least three times more than what she usually handled, even with the increasing numbers, and all of them are twice the size of her.
She gulped. It was not good odds, but she willed herself to fight: to protect Catherine, who is already safely sleeping in her bed. Flames ignited from her palm, and she threw the fireball out. It hit the nearest Void with no particular effect. She panicked; if that did not even damage the Void, she stood no chance against so many of them. Her mind raced into overdrive mode. She gathered all her power and concentrated a large stream of fire on the same Void. The Void certainly was injured, but it did not do so much as flinch. She was now drenched in sweat already; both sweat from the exertion of her powers and cold sweat from the fear of those… things. The same Void turned to head for her; she panicked, and tripped over something, and she lay on the ground, helpless against the impending disaster.
Just when the looming Void was about to sweep her away, the arm got cut off. Yes. The arm just went flying another direction.
“Geez, I really thought you could at least kill one of those. Well, you’re a rogue wizard, right? Celine, if I’m not mistaken.” a man’s voice, supposedly teenage-sounding, made himself clear that he saved her life.
The man in the black coat has finally appeared. With a sword in a hand and the black coat flapping in the wind, he looked like a god.
Thirty seconds later, all of the Voids lay dead. And by the looks of it , he has yet to even break a sweat. She did not suspect him now, only a overwhelming desire to know who he was.
“Man, you haven’t even stood op? Here.” the man reached out his hand, showing a face that was strong and boyish-looking, looking no older that how he sounded. She wondered that how on earth would a teenager of her age carry so much power with him. She’d first expected a dawdling old man in his fifties to carry such a power, but this was a far cry from what she had expected.
“Arche Vixen Skywalker, at your service. And quick, there’s another bunch of them coming to the school.”

Catherine
In life there usually is one thing that you would want to avoid or skip completely.
For Catherine, it is the scene she is currently witness to: two men fighting for their lives, one of theirs nearly spent.
Allen wanted her to leave; she refused, and chose to stick with him, watching the cruel one-sided fight.
“Run, Cat! What are you doing?” Allen’s ragged voice broke the silence, sparks flying in the air as he parried another strike, seemingly effortlessly by the bad guy in a top hat with some weird name…
“I’ll wait a while more. This play is getting boring.” the bad guy said, his previous words still resonating in her head like a bad nightmare, shaking her.
“Run, you hear me, Cat, run! Don’t get near me!” Allen was emphasising the exact thing Catherine was not wanting to do. Tears was, once again, flowing freely, yet there was no tall guy to hug him, comfort him. There was only a live horror play, making her feel like crying even more.
Allen blocked another hit, but the force of it pushed him back at an impossible distance, all the way back to Catherine, standing three metres back. Catherine rushed over to help her up.
“I doubt I can survive this. Do not choose to stick with me. Run. Live on your life, at least as a part of me.” Allen whispered into her ear, her tears dripping onto his face.
“Don’t cry,” he said, voice turning hoarser with every second, “You don’t look nice is you cry.”
She smiled sadly; wiping away her tears from her face, trying to look at him, when he saw that he was smiling too. Smiling at their last time together.
He forced himself to stand up again, using the chipped blade to push himself up, where she ran, and he stood.
A blade moved impossibly fast, and it Allen’s heart. Pulling out the blade, he looked for Catherine, but the crying girl had already left. Living on for him.

Stand where?
His Last StandFriday, 13 April. 0231hrs.

Walker
His pants of air was thick in the air.
The sword was gripped tightly with both hands, moving slightly with every shuddering breath.
The abdomen’s wound still has blood dripping from it, and the spear was still lodged to him.
His whole body was bloodied; with both his and the enemy’s blood, looking like a satanic mage.
Yet, the glint in his eyes clearly revealed a warrior, fighting for both Catherine’s and his life.
The dead Seconds and Thirds lie in an uneven, elevated circle around him, all dead, corpses piling up.
Catherine was behind Allen, out of the ring, yet never out of his heart.
A man, now known as the world’s most powerful man, wearing a full-black tuxedo, complete with a top hat, stood in front of this pair, eyeing them lazily.
“Another… one?” Allen muttered.
“Oh no, not just any other one. The Reaper itself, has come after the life of your… err… girlfriend.” the man said loudly, pronouncing his intentions clearly to both of them. In a flash, the man disappeared, appearing again behind Catherine, hands on her throat.
With his remaining strength, Allen dashed towards him, blade aimed directly at his throat. The man had to lose his grip, and sidestep to avoid the blade.
“Now now now, it wouldn’t do any good if you keep this up with me. Treasure your life well, and let all of us do our jobs.” the man coolly said, a shade of anger outpouring, and made a second move for Catherine.
This time Allen was prepared; he swung the bade at him just before the man reached her, and the man amazingly, stopped the blade with his bare hands.
“Do you know a person by the name of Wolfgang Lazarus? He is a man that wishes to control the world… by wiping out humanity.” Even the sobbing Catherine turned around to pay attention. “By … ah, exploiting humans’ weaknesses, normal humans with a thirst: a thirst for lust, money, power, they can find satisfaction by joining the group known as the Voids. Technically, these people will have to give up their souls for it, but it should be worthwhile, especially for them… and him, of course, who controls them. Their souls can attain things unimaginable when they are in their mortal bodies. Of course, a little pain is expected from the process, but who actually will care, if they can enjoy what they want afterwards?”
Allen, once again, shocked everyone in the scene by moving faster than the previous time, targeting him again, yet he deflected his blade with a simple flick of his finger, which even pushed him back. His lack of strength and blood caused him to fall on the asphalt ground, and Catherine rushed to help him.
“You all might want to know: how do I know him so well? The reason is very simple. I am him.”
Allen whispered to Catherine ,”Run away. I will hold him off.”
Catherine almost cried out ,”No! You… your’e gonna die! I cannot leave you here!”
Allen rose up from her arms, sword still in hands, ready to fight. “This is my fight as a man, and for my promise to protect you. Now go. Or I will personally settle the “run away” part.” A smile still played on his face; which Catherine thought will be the last she sees of him before the two men, Allen and Lazarus in deadly combat.
* By the way, Lazarus is a name that I came up on my own, but if you Google or Wiki it, it writes that Lazarus is a man that has been reborn by God… I dunno if that is going to be part of my story… but it could be used as character development!! And such a coincidence as well.*
